DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, June 18, 2021

DRF Staff|Jun 17, 2021
Gregorian Chant (left) wins the San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita
Benoit Photo Gregorian Chant (left) wins the San Simeon at Santa Anita on March 13. He ran seventh in the Grade 1 Jaipur at Belmont on Saturday and won't run again until the Green Flash at Del Mar on Aug. 22.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:40 PIM 1st B DETERMINED (#8, 6-1) is stepping up in class, but he might be worth a stab at in a wide-open event to start the day. He was very impressive in his first start as a 4-year-old, and it was also the first time he went around two turns on turf. He has had a couple of decent interim works, should move forward with a race behind him, and maybe this is what he’s been wanting to do all along. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:02 BEL 3rd UNICORN SALLY (#5, 12-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:28 GP 2nd VITAEMI (#1, 8-1) getting some class relief while returning to a surface she’s handled well in the past. Veteran looks like good fit in this spot. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:31 BEL 4th BANKSAMILLION (#3, 6-1) a half-sister to five winners from this dam, three of them debut winners, including the multiple Grade 1-placed sprinter Shoplifted; Mott doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his work with first-time starters - 15%, $2.31 ROI over the past five years with debut runners in dirt sprints; 16%, $2.33 ROI in that sample with 2yos over the past two years. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:02 BEL 5th G C CAM (#11, 15-1) made two starts last year, both sprinting on turf, and ran pretty well both times while never landing a serious blow. He broke slowly in his debut before racing on through the stretch vs. better, and he got stuck behind horses at a crucial point when dropped for his second start; returns as a new gelding while making his dirt debut. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:45 PIM 7th LUCKY RAMSEY (#8, 10-1) is an 8-time winner on turf so he will appreciate getting back on the lawn and the easier company after finishing fourth in the slop in a $16K starter race with a $25K claiming option won by Tusk, a Grade 3 winner with over $483K in earnings. His form last year puts him right there and he could be coming up to a big effort in his third start for Magee, who is having a strong meet. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:00 SA 1st Also-eligible FLASH OF GENIUS (#11, 5-1) wheels back in a week and stretches out from a better-than-looked fifth in a debut sprint. He reportedly showed speed in works, but broke slowly first out and finished evenly. With a clean break, back on short notice, he could be gone despite the outside post. Flashback is not a turf route sire, but the dam of ‘GENIUS was a turf router. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:40 BEL 8th HALPERT (#9, 12-1) made his career debut on this surface going longer, and he ran better than it may appear in that spot while part of a competitive pace in a race that went to closers, and he took money in that spot; well-bred 3yo overcame traffic to break his maiden on dirt and has had his form dirtied up a bit since with a stakes try followed by a chasing trip away from a strong rail; bred for this and will be a price. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:34 GP 6th JOST SAYIN (#3, 5-1) second best under these same conditions when making infrequent visit to main track two back despite wide trip finishing behind 6-5 Bimini. Not meeting that kind here. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:00 MTH 1st TIZ LOTTIE (#6, 6-1) is out of Culotte, who won her own career debut and went on to win a couple of stakes, and one of her two siblings to start, Stormymeister, also won first time out as a 2-year-old; this filly has a couple of nice works showing for this debut, especially the breeze on May 22nd. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:30 MTH 2nd JOHNNY OBVIOUS (#3, 6-1) was very game in defeat in his first start off the Asmussen claim pressing the pace from the start, and though he weakened late that sprint came up fast for the class and distance; back on the turf here, which may well be his best game. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:01 SA 5th The absence of speed in this claiming turf sprint benefits allowance dropper MISS LUCY (#3, 4-1). She chased fast fractions and split the field both recent starts against better, but could make the lead here. With a seven-pound apprentice allowance and murky pace scenario, ‘LUCY can win with a front-running or pace-pressing trip. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:00 MTH 5th BEE MAJOR (#2, 3-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:34 SA 8th The workout pattern by comeback filly TAMING THE TIGRESS (#8, 4-1) suggests she can fire first start since her maiden win last summer as a 2yo. She gets Lasix for her 3yo debut, trainer Peter Miller can fire with layoffs. She also gets regular rider Flavien Prat, who relinquishes the mount on back-to-back runner-up AGREETODISAGREE. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:07 SA 11th If she improves off her creditable U.S. debut, LA GIOIOSA (#1, 5-1) can win this maiden turf route while stretching from a mile to a mile and one-eighth. The Group 3-placed European actually ran okay in her comeback. She broke slowly, trailed, and went evenly late. With a race under her belt, she should move up a ton. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
