DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, July 31, 2020

DRF Staff|Jul 30, 2020
Laurel Park race start
Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club The Maryland Racing Commission is reviewing the legality of the Stronach Group's proposal.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:00 GP 1st Looking for a better break and a return to turf to get CHILLIN LADY (#7, 6-1) back in the game; hasn’t shown much in 3 main-track starts for Kathleen, but the Darsan homebred hinted last year at 2 that she might be OK on the grass; ought to know early on if she’s a threat or no. -Marty McGee

1:14 LRL 2nd Perhaps we’ll eventually see FUSED (#1, 6-1) over the jumps after being claimed by this barn, but he deserves one chance on the flat at the “non-winners of two” level after graduating in first start over this circuit. Union Rags gelding got up close to a solid pace that day, went after the second choice on the final turn and held off the latekicker despite drifting out under strong left-handed urging. There isn’t a ton of early gas in this field so it’s imperative for the jock to work out a similar pace-tracking trip. Pimentel departs for Noble Lione. -Dan Illman

2:02 GP 5th First try off the Catanese regrouping by TRACEABILITY (#6, 7-2) on June 21 sure was a heady performance, as he bid into the fray at 44-1 before incurring a tough beat; regressed a bit when risked back for $50k two Fridays ago, but now he’s back in for $32k as one of a handful of viables here; best effort can do. -Marty McGee

2:41 WO 4th ZOOMER MUSIC (#2, 10-1) finished on the fringes in both of his outings at the meet on different surfaces. He might be ready to put it all together third-time back at what could be a square price. -Ron Gierkink

2:47 LRL 5th KAILEE (#5, 6-1) looks to be racing herself into shape and might be at her best for this, her third start of the form cycle. Far back along the inside last time at Delaware, it appeared she took a bad step on the second turn that hampered her momentum. She then ran on with some interest in the stretch to be second-best to the chalk after encountering a bit of traffic trouble. -Dan Illman

3:18 WO 5th UNLIMITED TALENT (#7, 12-1) is by the good speed/debut sire Souper Speedy, and his dam dropped a stakes-placed juvenile. He’s worked seven half-miles here since wintering in Ocala, and goes with blinkers and Lasix. -Ron Gierkink

3:28 SAR 5th IMINCOMUNICADO (#12, 6-1) made her career debut over course and distance last summer as a 2yo and finished a solid 4th vs. better after getting outrun early; back to turf for her second start as a 3yo with blinkers on and she is getting significant class relief for this. -Mike Beer

3:40 GP 8th Hard to overstate what a great move it’s been for Louie Roussel, forsaking his longtime summer base in Chicago to hunker down instead in SoFla; stakes win here Saturday with Sailing Solo among his latest tales of success. Thinking KUNAL (#6, 10-1) can add another to the win column after having benefit of that sharp July 8 outing over the local course; needing A-Rod to push the right buttons when rematched with some of the same foes from that key race. -Marty McGee

3:59 LRL 7th It’s nice to see HENDAYA (#3, 7-2) back in the entries after she was involved in a terrible spill on turf here two weeks ago and it’s certainly fair to say she’s had her share of bad luck this form cycle. Two starts back, going very short at Charles Town, she broke well but lost valuable position when she was steadied in between horses in the opening furlong. She ran on well in the stretch and galloped out with some vigor against a pretty weak group of allowance horses. Takes a huge drop in class to the nickel and figures to get the right pace setup. -Dan Illman

4:40 SAR 7th ME AND MR. C (#8, 5-1) has been solid from the start while often running much better than it looks on paper, and he is versatile, as well, which should offer Davis some options in a race that does not have a ton of pace signed on; drops to a more logical spot for an excellent trainer. -Mike Beer

5:14 SAR 8th RUVIES IN TIME (#5, 20-1) took a noticeable step forward when winning her 3yo debut off the layoff last April and was unfortunately forced back to the sidelines shortly thereafter; making her third start back now after taking a game run at a good winner on the lead last time, and only weakening late. -Mike Beer

5:46 SAR 9th KARAK (#2, 6-1) finished behind a couple of these same rivals when 3rd in the Stewart Manor last November at Aqueduct, but she may have run the best race that day while going after a fast pace while three-wide on the turn and then dueling down the talented Lucrezia in the stretch, before the closers came to take over; back to turf for the first time since then after running well in her first two starts of 2020 on different surfaces. -Mike Beer

6:00 MTH 3rd LOVELY BROWN (#12, 12-1) could be overlooked some today if she is able to scratch in off the AE list, as her Beyers are a little light compared with the top contenders in this field, but she fits the race flow nicely as a closer given the presence of several speeds to her inside; working steadily toward her first start since January. -Kenny Peck

6:30 MTH 4th ORPHEUS (#4, 5-1) was no threat in his seasonal debut last time but he had little chance in that paceless event, which featured a two-speed exacta keyed by the favorite; his back figures are much better than that and he has license to run to them given an improved race flow and on this clear drop in class. -Kenny Peck

9:07 DMR 9th This sprint stakes for Cal-bred 3yos is the right spot for LIGHTNING FAST (#7, 8-1), who has improved this season. He was a first-time gelding when he crushed maidens in January, then took spring and early summer off while racing was interrupted. His comeback three weeks ago was only a prep. First in more than five months, facing older open allowance sprinters, he raced wide and ran around the track in a race designed as a prep for this race. ‘FAST faces easier than he met in the allowance, he is drawn outside, has tactical speed for a pressing trip and figures to move forward with a race under his belt. -Brad Free

10:00 DMR 11th DIAMOND OF VALUE (#8, 6-1) ran evenly and had trouble for twice this tag at LRC July4. She drops in price, has run well here before and gets the hot-riding Prat. – Michael Hammersly
