DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, April 30, 2021

DRF Staff|Apr 29, 2021
Clairiere wins Rachel Alexandra 2-13-2021
Hodges Photography / Lou Hodges Jr. Clairiere (1) returned $6.60 with the victory in the Rachel Alexandra at Fair Grounds on Saturday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:40 PIM 1st DISPUTED NOTION (#5, 15-1) tracked the pace inside over a muddy track, angled four deep turning into the stretch and finished evenly outside when dropped to this class level earlier in the month. Needs a bit of pace help up front, but has been in solid form since returning from lengthy layoff last year. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

12:58 BEL 2nd FINANCIALSTABILITY (#4, 10-1) has faced claiming rivals only three times to this point in his career, showing two wins and a close 2nd from those three efforts; tactical 6yo drops back down in a race that is not short of speed. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:11 PIM 2nd DASHING LOU (#5, 6-1) took a slight step forward in his most recent start. He got up close to the manageable pace, was forced to go three wide on the second turn when CHARGING LION got the rail run and stayed on evenly for a minor award. It will be interesting to see if he can duplicate that running style as there doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed in here. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:14 GP 4th NACOZARI (#8, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:30 TAM 5th HOITY TOITY (#7, 12-1) weakened after making a mid-race run in that last one, at this same level, but her prior Beyers put her right in the middle of this; dangerous given an honest pace up front. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:50 BEL 5th HONEY MONEY (#12, 8-1) hasn’t managed to build upon what looked like a promising maiden win last March, though there had been a layoff and she has also had some other excuses along the way, including in that last one when veering in and having to steady early, before contesting a strong pace in a race that went to closers; has some turf pedigree and may be better than she looks on paper as she switches to a barn that 8 for the last 32 first after a trainer change on turf (25%, $2.29 ROI). -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:59 TAM 6th CRAFTY CITY (#5, 12-1) is kin to four winners, including 18-time winner Lamas Festival and stakes-placed sprinter Crafty Contessa, who won her own debut; this filly debuts for a barn which does well with maiden claimers and she showed a couple of works that suggest she has some speed. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:44 GP 7th AWESOME ANNMARIE (#6, 7-2) earned a big 76 Beyer while crushing $16K NW3 opposition the last time she saw action March 24. She’s worked thrice since and would appear to be an excellent fit in this state-bred optional claimer. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:54 BEL 7th LOCALLY OWNED (#1, 20-1) was claimed out of disappointing effort last time vs. a strong field, and he was also facing much better in his prior two starts, including a run vs. Maxfield in the Tenacious; tactical 5yo goes off the claim for an excellent trainer after getting some time to regroup and he ran big in his only other start on this circuit when 3rd in a fast Saratoga allowance behind Prioritize (3rd in the Grade 1 Woodward in his next start) and Money Moves. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:58 TAM 8th TRULY A DREAM (#7, 5-2) seems to have a strong chance of stealing this race in her first start off the Robert Raymond claim, coming off a forward trip in an abbreviated sprint that was loaded with speed and now turning up in a 6 1/2 furlong race which is light on pace; she weakened in her first two starts but she was caught up in duels there, and she could well shake loose here. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:58 PIM 7th WRITTENBYTHESTARS (#3, 10-1) was rated behind a slow pace while saving ground, raced on hold in behind rivals on the turn, was in a bit tight at the three-sixteenths, then finished evenly over this surface eight days ago. Think that race will set her up nicely for today’s expanded distance and believe she’ll be a lot closer to the pace this time around. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:04 CD 9th LI’L TOOTSIE (#9, 8-1) might have won her route debut -- and won it somewhat impressively shooting up the fence in the slop - but I don’t think she ever was meant to be a route horse, and I see her Fair Grounds Oaks performance in that context. Similarly, I’d guess the two-turn distance, more than the lack of Lasix, did her in March 20 at FG. Her debut was solid, her second start an eye-opener - she crushed Euphoric, and look what that filly, who starts here, did in her subsequent starts. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

4:35 TAM 9th DREAMIN OF SEVILLE (#8, 7-2) has some of the best figures in this field and he ships back from Gulfstream to meet the weakest field he’s seen yet; gets off the hedge for the first time since his race here three back which figures to help him work out a clean trip as he looks to make the last run. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:48 GP 9th JAZZY T (#10, 8-1) carved out the fractions before tiring when bet down to 9-2 at first asking against slightly tougher. This shorter turf tilt came up light, and she could make all the running with Paco taking over. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:05 BEL 9th I’LLHANDALTHECASH (#1, 20-1) didn’t finish off her 4yop campaign strongly after winning this race in a driving rainstorm last July, though she may rate the benefit of the doubt for some of those efforts while catching ground that may not have been to her liking; her best race gives her a real chance vs. a field like this and she can easily return to top form after getting some time off. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:10 PIM 9th NAUTICAL NATURE (#8, 9-2) showed good speed when sprinting on turf at Laurel last fall as he blasted to an uncontested lead only to falter late behind sharp Godlovesasinner (returned to finish third in the Maryland Million Turf Sprint with an 87 Beyer). He’s been in some tough dirt races since being claimed by these connections (Whiskey and Rye returned from the March 21 heat to beat “two-other-than” foes on dirt with a 75 Beyer) and should appreciate a bit of class relief. Crispin departs for Big Hambone. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:51 CD 11th Discounting 2020, when the KY Oaks was run in September, the Oaks winner four times in the last six years has come out of the Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds? Three of those Oaks winners won the Rachel Alexandra, while Lovely Maria lost it. This year’s Rachel Alexandra winner, CLAIRIERE (#3, 5-1), seems like a great play at the expected odds. Trainer Steve Asmussen does not start out many of his horses in two-turn races, but this filly, racing at Churchill, overcame a lot to win a route race last fall in her unveiling. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

7:00 CD 13th Have no inside info, from trainer or clocking, on first-timer PORTILLA (#8, 15-1), but do know that trainer A Stall is very clever with his first-timers, and that the live ones often don’t show it through fast drills. Seems to me no accident this filly shows up in an Oaks Day MSW, and there is not a ton to beat based on the established form. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

7:52 SA 8th HARTEL (#2, 5-1) faces a slightly easier pace scenario than last out, when he was hounded into defeat by a pesky longshot and finished third. There is less heat in this turf race, and HARTEL also benefits by the shorter distance, cutting back from six and onehalf furlongs to six. Although only one of the last 14 turf sprints at this distance was won by the pacesetter, HARTEL nonetheless gets the call to lead gate to wire. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
