DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, April 22, 2022

DRF Staff|Apr 21, 2022
Keeneland starting gate
Coady Photography Keeneland has increased stakes purses for its 2022 spring meeting that begins April 8.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:20 TAM 1st CANDY MY BOY (#2, 7-2) exits sprints and lands in a race devoid of pace; his overall win percentage is a slight concern but if he's able to shake loose and control the tempo from the start he figures tough to reel in. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

12:40 LRL 1st AMICALOLA FALLS (#3, 5-1) tracked three wide and in between, dropped inside and was hard-ridden, eased outside the leader, and wore that one down to graduate over muddy going. Exceeded the Beyer par for this level and can be forgiven his one bad race over fast-dirt (without Lasix and blinkers against eventual multiple stakes-winner Shake Em Loose). Barn is 4 for the last 15 (27%, $3.50 ROI) with last-out maiden winners in dirt sprints. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:32 KEE 2nd QUARIA DREAM (#6, 20-1) was eliminated from win contention making her career debut last out in a TP Tapeta route MSW when another horse bashed into her early on the first turn. The filly wound up much too far back and ended up finishing pretty well, coming between horses in upper stretch, and galloping out with decent energy. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:47 LRL 3rd BEARGREASE (#3, 6-1) breezed a furlong in 10 1/5 before being purchased in a private sale at last spring's auction. She's by an 18% debut sire out of a route-winning half-sister to stakes-winning turf router Runaway Victor and stakes-winning dirt sprinter Roberto's Minister. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:52 AQU 2nd BIG BEAN CHRISTINE (#4, 15-1) has run improved races in her two most recent starts on the main track, though she had no real excuse in that last one after working a trip and making a clear stretch lead, only to get outfinished by a pair of first-time starters; finished far behind in her lone turf start, though she was facing open MSW rivals had some trouble in that spot which exaggerated the final margin. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:00 OP 1st HOPING FOR A RING (#2, 9-2) picks up a tad more real estate and her last win came at this six furlong trip. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:09 GP 3rd GILLIGAN (#6, 9-2) staying put off claim, working well for new connections since switching barns. One last chance for this tag. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:28 TAM 5th HOITY TOITY (#7, 4-1) makes her first start off the claim by trainer Jesus Cruz, which makes him a threat by default, given the barn's record with new faces, but she also has appeal based on that strong effort last time and her consistent overall Beyers; raced well off the pace in that mile try last time but expecting her to be more involved in the opening stages today as she goes back to nine furlongs. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:52 AQU 4th MILL STONE CREEK (#2, 9-2) was up in class when switched back to dirt last November at Finger Lakes and she didn't run poorly in that spot while caught in behind horses as the eventual winner was sweeping to the lead out in the clear; broke through the gate prior to the starts and then never got involved in her final start before the layoff; have to demand a price on 6yo maiden as she puts blinkers back on for her return. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:08 KEE 5th NOTA BENE's (#12, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:13 GP 5th SASH (#9, 8-1) winless for quite some time but training forwardly for local bow, might get brave if able to shake loose, relax long enough on front end in this very wide open and full field of turf runners. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:51 LRL 7th KILLY START (#2, 5-1) tracked a moderate pace while four-wide, made a three-wide bid on the turn and defeated two next-out winners when graduating for $32,000. She has plenty of upside, but will be tested stepping up in class for the first time. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:01 TAM 8th RISING FAITH (#9, 8-1) needn't be a beat to win this $10,000 maiden claimer at first asking, and her work tab contains a couple of breezes that hint at some ability; kin to two starters, both winners, and both won early in their careers, as 2-year-olds. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:03 OP 5th FORSAKEN (#9, 8-1) met winners for the first time last out, broke from the rail in a large field, and set a quick, pressured pace. He gets off the fence here in a draw that might give Arrieta options. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:23 LRL 8th SUMMER ODDS (#2, 5-1) looked good grabbing a $25,000 starter optional two weeks ago. Broke sharp, settled nicely behind a quick opening quarter while in between rivals, made a looping three-wide move to command at the five-sixteenths and was well on her way. This is certainly a tougher group, but she's sharp and it's possible we haven't seen her best with only nine starts on her page. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:32 TAM 9th TOOLEGITTOQUIT (#4, 8-1) made an early bid for the lead after stalking the pacesetter, and while she flattened out late she was in against much better there, on the dirt; she was no threat in her two turf tries last year but those were against better, at Gulfstream, and she meets a seemingly soft group. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:52 GP 8th BARONE CESCO (#7, 9-2) getting Lasix for first time and could prove beneficiary of a field loaded with speed. Exiting career best Beyer despite being over-matched last time against likes of undefeated Big Invasion and speedy Lucci. Not facing that kind in this spot. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:16 KEE 9th The timing and circumstance are right to consider LADY MYSTIFY (#6, 15-1) for an upset over the two short prices, BONNY SOUTH and MALATHAAT. Both those are coming off winter breaks and have more major objectives on their upcoming agenda. For Lady Mystify, this is just a race that fits. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:39 OP 8th SMARTY GRIMES (#1, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mary Rampellini). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:10 OP 9th TRUCULENT (#3, 9-2) has been right there at this level in his last two starts and as such is a logical choice back. He also draws a useful kind of post. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:10 MED (Harness) 3rd BRONSONS DELIGHT (#3, 4-1) raced well from a tough post in his first start for trainer Cano while coming off a four-week break. He catches a soft field here and any step forward should make him tough. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:35 YR (Harness) 3rd RISKY MILLION (#7, 3-1) returns to Yonkers at a much-reduced level and he's also now in the Dowse barn so he picks up leading driver Bartlett; lots to like despite the poor post. – Matt Rose | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:40 WBS (Harness) 9th DOCS DELIGHT (#5, 8-1) has faced tougher than these all year so far and she has a good chance to get off the schneid tonight; top call. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
