DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, April 21, 2023
?q=100)
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook; something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day's action.
12:18 TAM 1st CITY OF CLOUDS (#6, 6-1) is out of a dam who won her own debut and she produced three winners, including We the Clouds, who won her first career start; from the barn of trainer Timothy Hamm, who does well with first time starters, particularly in maiden claimers. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:00 KEE 1st CURRENT (#2, 20-1) never has been in for less than $35K and connections are getting aggressive at this $25K claiming class coming back from a layoff. He was over the top when he made his most recent dirt start, late last year at Haw, but his previous dirt performance on a fast track, about one year ago at HAW, probably would win this. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:11 GP 2nd RIGBY (#5, 6-1) a popular item at claim box of late and hard to fault in current form. Lone career win came on grass and she just might prove the controlling speed in this spot. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:45 GP 3rd TEASING (#2, 6-1) has been away a fulll year but seems to be training well for yer return and showed promise last season when third after contesting pace with Green Up who would go on to win her next three starts including a pair of stakes off the big maiden win. Surely not facing that kind meeting today unless a firster like PARTY FAVOR has that kind of talent. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:55 TAM 4th RISK VS REWARD (#4, 9-2) gets back to seven furlongs and this may be an advantage for him, as he has enough early speed to make the lead in this relatively paceless sprint; did well to hold the show after pressing the winner from the start in that last one. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:24 AQU 3rd KAZ'S BEACH (#3, 9-2) had little chance with front-running Today's Flavor when back from the layoff in February; went backward last time but that kind of wet track might not be to his liking; has something to prove now after making only limited appearances last year but he is now third off the layoff and he was underrated early on; projects to have a setup in this spot. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:29 TAM 5th BRUMBA WAFFLE TOES (#2, 8-1) gets Lasix for his first start of 2023 but he can win this if ready, as he faced better in several of his races at the end of last year and his lone turf try produced a Beyer that fits well with these, despite the fact he was trying to close into slow splits; fast pace helps the cause. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:42 GP 5th ANOTHER DUKE (#6, 6-1) second best against open $8K company behind wire to wire, 4/5 favorite Man On the Moon in his last while posting best Beyer in recent memory. Steps up in price but likely not class returning with conditioned claimers today. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:44 OP 3rd SHIP IT (#4, 10-1) is something of a fresh face, as this marks her first out since February. She also has an age edge on these. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:24 LRL 7th WILD BEHAVIOR (#6, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:00 SA 1st BEAUDACIOUS (#5, 4-1) improved adding blinkers for the first time; his third in a restricted claiming turf sprint gives him a license to upset this starter allowance turf sprint. He showed more speed, made a run at the pacesetting winner on the turn, then flattened out. Decent effort. This race could unfold at a softer tempo; BEAUDACIOUS should be forwardly placed. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:06 TAM 8th ALQWANI (#7, 5-1) has been training steadily toward this seasonal debut, and she does figure to be a threat here if she can run to her best efforts in her first start since November; has the speed to stay close from the start but she can also rate and make one run. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:30 SA 2nd Six entrants in this maiden-20 route for fillies and mares; this is a split of the sixth race. MIDNIGHT SILENCE (#3, 4-1) drops to the bottom class level second start back from a layoff; her races here last spring are fast enough. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:34 AQU 7th BRISKY FROLIC (#6, 10-1) last routed on turf in January of 2022 and she might have been best that day with trips ultimately making the difference; both main track wins since have come when in control early but she was not a need-the-lead type on this surface early on and she might be better on the grass. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:38 AQU 9th SWAY'SINMYDNA (#9, 15-1) has shown some run in all four starts so far while lacking a strong finish each time; interesting trying turf for the first time as she is out of a dam who won a pair of Group 1 races on this surface in her native South Africa. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
7:15 GG 6th LOTSA PEPPER (#2, 5-1) is awfully quick and while her last 2 good races came on synthetic she's as good - maybe better - on turf. Those last 2 were also his first 2 starts after a few months off so she's eligible to be even better. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
7:45 GG 7th SMILING MOLLY (#6, 8-1) chased the pace and stayed on gamely to post a 19-1 upset in a race like this here March 5. That was her first start here after campaigning in SoCal but she obviously has no issue with the footing and that March 5 win shows the level suits, too. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:15 GG 8th RESERVOIR (#7, 8-1) was a smashing winner of her debut here Feb. 3, earning a heady Beyer to boot. Taking these big maiden winners at a short price when facing winners for the first time is risky business, and it's a bit disconcerting she hasn't been seen since and that they risked her for a cheap tag but she's been working steadily, Wright is strong off this kind of layoff, she's not risked for a tag here and the manner of her maiden win was very smart. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
