DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, April 14, 2023

DRF Staff|Apr 13, 2023
Keeneland turf racing
Keeneland/Coady Photography First post for Keeneland racing is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 KEE 1st NASTY HABIT (#6, 15-1) debuts for HOF trainer Bill Mott, who has not, over the long term, been known for first-start winners. However, since 12/30/22, Mott with first-time starters in dirt sprint maiden-special-weights has gone an eye-catching 11-5-2-1. Haven't seen any of Nasty Habit's works (please, pundits - stop saying a horse is "working well" because of numbers on a page) but the times have been quick. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:32 KEE 2nd BOURBON FEVER (#4, 10-1) been working toward this first start throughout the winter and spring and might just be aggressively spotted in this ridiculously deep $50K maiden-claimer. Dam has gotten nothing to race as of yet but she won her career debut in a SoCal turf sprint. Needs to be able to take a sit off the pace since Insolito and Talkin Pharoah, if not others, are going for it up front. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:35 OP 1st ROWDY DAISY (#9, 10-1) has an age edge on all of these as she is 4. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:52 AQU 2nd PIT BOSS (#2, 6-1) had little chance in his first two starts at this level upon arriving from out of town when bumping into class-dropping, blowout winners War Stopper (91 Beyer) and Sundaeswithsandy (91 Beyer); good effort two back over a distance that might be too far for him, and he was in too tough again last time in another race that came back fast; one more try. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:59 TAM 4th SPETTACOLI (#7, 20-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:04 KEE 3rd MISS TAPPY TONE (#9, 8-1) did get a good setup but won nicely in her career debut, a $50K maiden-claiming sprint that got her eligible for this $50K N1X starter race. Not going to hold her second-start defeat going a route of ground against good allowance company against her, and the high, high, high percentage trainer still is valuing the filly not running her for a tag. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:30 TAM 5th R FUNNY BIZNESS (#3, 9-2) is certainly sharp right now, coming off an easy win where she was much the best while posting a Beyer (78) that was well above par for the class and distance (68); takes a step up in class for this but may be good enough in her current form. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:52 LRL 6th CONTEMPT (#4, 10-1) is a half to Grade 3-winning dirt sprinter Majestic Reason (won debut), stakes-placed turf router Good Reasoning (76 turf Beyer top) and stakes-placed dirt sprinter Jump for Love (64 turf Beyer) by a sire that has won with 23% of his first-time starters since the beginning of 2022. The dam was a stakes-winning dirt sprinter (won debut, 75 dirt Beyer) while the second dam was a stakes-placed dirt miler (93 dirt Beyer). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:08 KEE 5th WONDERFULL LADY (#6, 5-1) was pulling much too hard early in her last Palm Meadows workout video that's available, but the drill came way back on Feb. 22 and will guess she has settled down since then. Definitely was settled in her French races, which were good. Won well over so-so competition in her lone start on good ground, and going on soft in G3 to cap her campaign she had a spot of upper-stretch trouble and was right behind the top three. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:28 AQU 5th MAMA BANNED ME (#10, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:15 GG 1st PRNCSS OF DEL MAR (#6, 6-1) has shown some speed in her first 2 starts, and fared better in start No. 2 when 4th after dropping to this level. She's worked since and with her speed and the outside slot could fall into a real nice stalking trip. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:39 TAM 9th PURE ELEGANCE (#9, 12-1) has been racing exclusively on dirt, and she was well off the board in her last two, but she lost all chance at the start last time out and the race two back was against better, and it came up fast; lone turf try to date was actually in her career debut, a sprint, and though she failed to threaten a slow start from the hedge didn't help. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:06 AQU 8th MISCHIEF MOTION (#12, 15-1) debuted sprinting on turf vs. MSW rivals and did more running than it may appear in that spot while looking very green early as the lone first-time starter in the field; interesting back on turf after just missing off the layoff last time on dirt. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:12 GG 3rd TIGER'S ARROW (#7, 4-1) has certainly more than his fair share of chances (16) but his recent work has been his best so maybe, just maybe, he's ready to break through. That last 2ns looks better, too, when you note 2 he faced that day came right back to win. He's drawn on the far outside but has enough tactical speed to avoid getting hung out to dry on the first turn. His lone sib is full-sis Smiling Molly (10-2-1-2, $110K). -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:26 OP 8th PROTEGE (#9, 6-1) might get an ideal stalking trip behind the ample speed in this spot. He also is appealing for his company lines, which include eventual stakes winners Hit Show and Lugan Knight. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:03 LS 2nd LOVING LUCKY (#3, 9-2) goes for a top barn and gets good race flow all while third off the layoff. Connections find a good spot as there are 3 speed runners in here. This gelding draws fine (who doesn't in a six horse field) and keeps Elliott who is 25% for this barn. This gelding even has a little back class. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
