Jim Dunleavy, the mid-Atlantic correspondent for Daily Racing Form, has been named the winner of the 2018 Bill Handleman Award by Monmouth Park to recognize outstanding coverage of the track’s marquee race, the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational. Dunleavy was honored for his write-up of a race in which Girvin caught McCracken in the final stride, with Practical Joke not far behind. This is the first Handleman Award for Dunleavy, who covers racing and racing issues throughout the mid-Atlantic region. “Jim is the consummate professional and his coverage of the 2017 Haskell Invitational certainly reflected that professionalism,” said John Heims, Monmouth Park’s director of racing/racing secretary. “He was able to capture all of the elements of last year’s exciting three-horse finish in one of the most memorable Haskells ever run.” The Handleman Award is named for the late Bill Handleman, who died in 2010 at the age of 62 after covering Monmouth Park for nearly 30 years.
