Woodbine DRF reporter and handicapper Ron Gierkink is one of five finalists in the writing category for his feature on trainer Katerina Vassilieva and her journey toward the Queen’s Plate with favored Rondure. The others are Chris Lomon, Ivan Bigg, Dave Briggs, and George Williams.

Freelance photographer Julie Wright is a finalist in the outstanding photograph category for her DRF photo of Rougir after her victory in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes. Joining her in that category are Allan de la Plante and Lisa Thompson.

Woodbine Entertainment Group, Horse Racing Alberta, and Peter Gross are the finalists in the digital audio/visual and broadcast category.

The winner in each of the media award categories, along with the other Sovereign Award winners and Canada’s Horse of the Year, will be announced during the 48th annual Sovereign Awards ceremony on April 13 at the Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, Ontario.

Longtime Alberta trainer Dale Saunders will be presented with the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit. Selected unanimously by The Jockey Club of Canada’s stewards, it is a lifetime achievement award honoring those who have made significant contributions to the Thoroughbred industry in Canada.

Amber Hutchinson and Ricardo Nicholson will both be bestowed with the 2022 outstanding groom award at the ceremony.
