OCEANPORT, N.J. – Dreamsgonewild was a respectable third in his comeback last month at Saratoga. Any improvement on that effort makes him a factor Friday in the $37,800 allowance feature going five furlongs on turf at Monmouth Park. The second-level $30,000 optional claimer attracted a field of 10 with nine betting interests. Trainer Marcus Vitali sends out an entry of The Imposter and Inspeightofthings, a pair of 3-year-olds making their debuts for a new barn after racing on synthetic surfaces. Dreamsgonewild, trained by Bruce Alexander, most recently ranged into contention against second-level statebreds before flattening out in the drive. That was understandable, considering the 266-day layoff. “He seldom loses ground in the last eighth of mile, and he did level out,” Alexander said. “He might have been a trifle short. I expect him to move forward, and he’s had just enough time off to not regress.” The other factor in his favor, according to Alexander, is the possible pace scenario. “The thing most helpful to me is the abundance of speed in there,” he said. “Pace makes the race, no matter what the distance.” Both Dreamsgonewild and Alexander are looking for their first win of the season. Alexander, 0 for 10 in 2014, is looking to rebuild momentum following a very quiet winter. He won the training title here in 2010 and tied for fourth in 2012. Key contenders Dreamsgonewild (Last 3 Beyers: 77-77-75) * Certainly has room for improvement following a third-place comeback effort against statebreds at Saratoga. * Although Alexander would prefer more ground, Dreamsgonewild has a win and a second in two tries at this five-furlong distance. Over and Back (Last 3 Beyers: 84-70-78) * Has settled nicely into a turf-sprint groove, with a record of 2-1-1 in four grass races at 5 1/2 furlongs or shorter. * Rolled to a pacesetting first-level win last time out at Delaware Park for an 84 Beyer Speed Figure, tying Didn’t Take It for the best last-race turf number. Inspeightofthings (Last 3 Beyers: 89-77-75) * The more intriguing of the Vitali runners, Inspeightofthings closed a ton of ground most recently to miss by only a half-length over Arlington’s synthetic strip in a career-best 89 Beyer performance. * His one turf effort came in New Jersey, a neck loss at the Meadowlands last October. He landed the outside post, not the worst spot, considering his deep-closing style. ** There is a $89,516 carryover for Friday’s Jersey Shore Six wager. The 10-cent base wager only pays out its jackpot if there is a single winning pick six ticket. If there is more than one winning ticket, they split 60 percent of the net pool, with 40 percent going to the carryover.
