Dreamfyre to test turf

The undefeated 2-year-old filly Dreamfyre is switching surfaces for her next start, the Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 8.
Dreamfyre won two sprint stakes on dirt during the summer – the Everett Nevin Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton on July 9 in her debut, and the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 12.
Dreamfyre was scratched from the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 9 after trainer O.J. Jauregui said the filly had lost her appetite in the days leading to the race.
Jauregui said the distance and surface of the $200,000 Surfer Girl Stakes is preferred to the Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes, a $200,000-race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt at Santa Anita on Oct. 7. He expressed concern that Dreamfyre may be a sprinter.
“I don’t know if she can go a mile or 1 1/16 miles on the dirt,” Jauregui said. “I think it’s best to go on the turf, especially with her speed. It’s the best shot for me.”
In recent weeks, Dreamfyre has resumed workouts at Golden Gate Fields, where Jauregui is based.
“I brought her home and she started eating good, little-by-little,” he said. “The blood was good. I wanted to make sure I could bring her back.”
Owned by Danny Eplin, Dreamfyre has earned $165,000 for her two wins.
