Dreamcall by a neck in Jack Bishop Stakes

Asmussen’s far-flung training operation doesn’t include a string at Prairie Meadows, but his raids there from his other Midwest bases have brought back plenty of loot in the last year. Asmussen-trained horses went 5-2-1 from 10 Prairie Meadows stakes starts in 2017, and on Friday night, the Asmussen-trained Dreamcall won the $50,000 Jack Bishop Stakes.
Dreamcall and jockey David Cabrera got up by a neck over Girl Power, who coughed up a six-length stretch-call lead in the Jack Bishop, a two-turn route for older fillies and mares. The top two were far better than the rest, with Girl Power 10 1/4 lengths in front of third-place Divine Dutchess at the finish. The race was riddled with scratches: Beach Flower, Jeri Bella, Julerette, and possible favorite Pinch Hit all were scratched.
Christmas Sky, the 4-5 favorite, lit out for the lead but went too fast too soon, opening up by three lengths at the first call. Girl Power chased the pacesetter, took over midrace, appeared to have the Jack Bishop in her grasp at the eighth pole, but tired late from her early exertions. Dreamcall, who got a dream trip from the back of the short field, stopped the timer in 1:43.77 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track.
Dreamcall paid $5.80 in winning the first stakes of her career, moving her record to 4-2-2 from 14 starts. A Mike Rutherford homebred, Dreamcall is by Midnight Lute and out of Foxcaller, by Beau Genius. Foxcaller has been a prolific producer of runners; nine of her offspring have won at least one race, and Dreamcall became her second stakes winner.
