Dream Shake, Edgeway headed to stakes

When Dream Shake closed from eighth to record a 20-1 upset in a high-profile maiden special weight race for 3-year-olds on Sunday at Santa Anita, trainer Peter Eurton watched in admiration as the colt pulled clear in the final furlong.
“That was way beyond my expectations,” Eurton recalled Monday.
There is a stakes race in the short-term future for Dream Shake.
Dream Shake, owned by the partnership of Exline-Border Racing, SAF Racing, and Richard Hausman, earned an eye-catching 96 Beyer Speed Figure in Sunday’s win, finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.34 under jockey Joel Rosario.
Dream Shake won by 4 3/4 lengths, beating a field that included two highly regarded colts trained by Bob Baffert in 3-5 favorite Bezos and 6-1 Tivoli Twirl, who finished seventh and ninth after racing near the front early.
Baffert said Bezos got “really tired” in the second half of the race.

Eurton and his clients debated race plans for Dream Shake in the minutes after Sunday’s race. On Monday, Eurton said he will scout opportunities in late February and early March. One option is the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 6.
“I want to get him around two turns,” Eurton said.
By Twirling Candy, Dream Shake was purchased for $75,000 at a 2-year-olds in training sale last year.
An hour after Dream Shake’s win, Edgeway, a 1-2 favorite, won her 2021 debut by three lengths in an allowance race for fillies and mares at six furlongs.
Edgeway, owned by Pete and Kosta Hronis, won for the third time in her fifth start Sunday, her first race since a second in the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs last June.
Ridden by Rosario on Sunday, Edgeway closed from third, finishing six furlongs in 1:09.16. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94.
“We think she’s one of our best prospects for the year, a lightly raced 4-year-old,” Sadler said. “It was a good-looking win.”
Sadler nominated Edgeway to this Saturday’s Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes at seven furlongs for fillies and mares as a precaution in case Sunday’s allowance race did not draw sufficient entries. Edgeway will not start in the Santa Monica, but it will not be long before the filly appears in a stakes.
“We want to be in the big ones,” Sadler said.
