Dream Jereem, Boston Tea Party meet as first-time geldings

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – First-start geldings Dream Jereem and Boston Tea Party are among a field of eight in Thursday’s Woodbine headliner, a six-furlong turf sprint on the main course which combines nonwinners-of-two allowance types with $50,000 claiming sophomores.

Trained by Kevin Attard for owner Derek Chin, Dream Jereem looked promising when notching his debut at 2 last October, but it’s been all downhill since. He had a troubled trip when seventh in his only other 2-year-old outing in the Coronation Futurity, a nine-furlong stakes for Canadian-breds.

Dream Jereem has started twice this year. After ending up eighth in the May 21 King Corrie Stakes, he finished seventh in a two-turn allowance after stumbling at the break and getting away slowly.

Dream Jereem is making his turf debut and is a son of the good 16 percent turf-sprint sire Astern. The gelding is the second foal from a grass winner in maiden special weight company at Mountaineer. Attard is adding blinkers to his equipment and will give leading rider Kazushi Kimura a leg up.

Boston Tea Party made all three of his starts on turf in the spring and summer of 2022 in New York before going on hiatus. The 4-year-old won his debut in a six-furlong maiden special by three lengths with an 87 Beyer Speed Figure, then went on to finish fifth after getting fried in a pace duel in the one-mile Manilla Stakes, also at Belmont Park.

Boston Tea Party turned back to 5 1/2 furlongs in a July 28 allowance at Saratoga and was softened up in a speed duel again, eventually ending up sixth.

Patrick Husbands has the mount on Boston Tea Party for trainer John Charalambous, who sent out the son of American Pharoah to record back-to-back fast five-furlong works last month on different surfaces.

Causin’ Mayhem is aiming for his first victory since earning his diploma in June of last year at Belmont. He subsequently ran third in the Plate Trial Stakes before a disappointing 10th in the prestigious Queen’s Plate in August.

Causin’ Mayhem has started twice here this year for owner-breeder Chiefswood Stables’ farm trainer Layne Giliforte. The son of leading sire Into Mischief had a wide journey while closing for second in a turf sprint on May 28, before finishing a fading sixth when going long on the Tapeta in another race at this level on July 2. The blinkers come off and Eswan Flores retains the mount Thursday.

Rounding out the fifth-race lineup are Bajan Bullet, Musical Spell, Victoria’s Chief, Ninetyfour Expos, and Sea to Air.

Seven of the nine races on the card were rescheduled from last week, when racing was canceled on Thursday and Friday due to excessive heat. Post time is 4:50 p.m.
