HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – If you can judge a horse by the company he’s kept, it will certainly be tough to side against Dr Zempf in Friday’s $88,000 main event at Gulfstream Park, a 7 1/2-furlong allowance for older horses on the turf. Dr Zempf will make his U.S. debut for trainer Chad Brown and owner Peter Brant after holding his own with some outstanding competition in Europe. As a 2-year-old, Dr Zempf captured one of four starts while also finishing second in the Group 1 Phoenix, a head in front of Go Bears Go, who several months later ran a close second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar. Last season, Dr Zempf won two of five outings, including the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes going seven furlongs at Leopardstown in Ireland in June. The following month he finished third in a Group 2 event at the Curragh, beaten four lengths by winner Order of Australia, the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner who ran sixth, just 2 1/4 lengths behind winner Modern Games, in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Mile. Dr Zempf was a half-length behind Pearls Galore at the Curragh, and she went on to win the Group 1 Matron in September. :: Get ready for Gulfstream Park racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  In his most recent appearance, Dr Zempf ran eighth in the Group 2 City of York Stakes on Aug. 20. The winner, Kinross, returned to capture a pair of Group 1 stakes in Europe before running third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and the runner-up, Pogo, won a Group 2 at Newmarket before finishing seventh after contesting the pace in the BC Mile. Dr Zempf has had six works at Brown’s winter home at Payson Park, including four furlongs on the dirt in 50.20 on Feb. 25. He was hard held in that work and much the best in company with the younger Belouni, who finished seventh here Saturday, beaten just three lengths in the Colonel Liam Stakes. Tyler Gaffalione rides Dr Zempf, who has been gelded since his previous start and will race on Lasix for the first time Friday. Dr Zempf should find no shortage of pace to run at Friday, with Speaking, Call Me Harry, Chuck Willis, and First Empire all at their best when on or near the lead. Call Me Harry will add blinkers while seeking his first victory since defeating New York-breds going a mile on the turf at Aqueduct on Oct. 13. Chuck Willis won an allowance race and an overnight handicap in wire-to-wire fashion here during the spring of 2021. He was 10th here in his last start, the five-furlong Janus Stakes on Dec. 24. A swift pace also should help the cause of Starting Over, Eamonn, and Sky’s Not Falling, who was 48-1 when rallying to defeat slightly softer allowance company by a neck here in his 2022 finale. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
