Dr. Venkman, winner of the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 23, worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday in preparation for a likely start in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 1. Trainer Mark Glatt said Dr. Venkman is being considered for the $1 million BC Dirt Mile, but that the Sprint at six furlongs is preferred. “We’re probably leaning toward the Sprint, but we’re keeping an open mind,” Glatt said. “The Sprint doesn’t look nearly as deep as the (Dirt) Mile potentially could be.” Dr. Venkman followed his win in the seven-furlong Pat O’Brien Stakes with a second-place finish to Imagination in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at six furlongs on Sept. 28. Dr. Venkman closed from sixth of eight from an inside post to lose by 1 3/4 lengths. :: Bet Santa Anita with confidence! Get DRF All Access Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and more.
