Dr. Shane surprises at 13-1 in New York Breeders' Futurity

Dr. Shane, winless in four starts since winning his career debut in May, ran down heavily favored Championofthenile to score a 13-1 upset in Saturday’s 206,963 New York Breeders’ Futurity at Finger Lakes.
Ridden for the first time by Jaime Rodriguez, the leading rider at Finger Lakes, Dr. Shane ($29.80) launched a four-wide bid coming around the turn, put his head in front at the eighth pole, and blew past Championofthenile and jockey Jose Ortiz to win by two lengths after six furlongs in 1:12.85.
Championofthenile, part of an early pace battle with Saratoga Giro through fractions of 21.93 and 45.49 seconds, held second as the 1-4 favorite with the maiden Mind Your Biscuits another two lengths back in third.
Championofthenile was coming back 20 days after finishing third as the 6-5 favorite in the Bertram Bongard at Belmont Park.
Dr. Shane, trained by Nick Esler for Dutchess Views Farm, had finished second in last month’s Aspirant in his first Finger Lakes appearance. He had previously finished third in a pair of stakes restricted to New York-breds at Belmont and Saratoga.
