Dr. Schivel sidelined until fall

Dr. Schivel, a two-time Grade 1 winner who was third in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai in March, is unlikely to race until autumn.
Trainer Mark Glatt said on Sunday that Dr. Schivel “is not quite back to his old self” following the trip overseas.
“We’re not going to push the issue until he tells us he’s ready,” Glatt said. “It looks more like the fall.
“We know when he’s 100 percent, and he’s not.
“He doesn’t have anything specifically wrong with him. Since he came back from a break after the Dubai trip, his feet are bugging him a little bit. There is nothing especially alarming.”
A 4-year-old colt, Dr. Schivel was second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November. In the Golden Shaheen at six furlongs on March 26, Dr. Schivel finished 2 1/4 lengths behind Switzerland.
Owned by the partnership of Red Baron’s Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, and Bill Branch, Dr. Schivel has won 5 of 10 starts and $1,076,500. He won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in September 2020 in his final start for trainer Luis Mendez, and the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar last July for Glatt.

Following the recent Dubai race, Glatt had mentioned the $400,000 Bing Crosby Stakes on July 30 as a potential race for Dr. Schivel, but those plans are no longer in discussion.
