Dr. Schivel gets new owners, will move to Glatt's barn

A majority share of Dr. Schivel, the expected favorite in Monday’s Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity, was sold earlier this week to Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal.
Dr. Schivel will remain with trainer Luis Mendez through Monday’s $250,000 Del Mar Futurity and will be transferred to trainer Mark Glatt after the race, according to Tim Cohen of Rancho Temescal.
A colt by Violence, Dr. Schivel won his third start in a maiden special weight race at six furlongs on Aug. 8 by 5 3/4 lengths.
The expected field for the Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs includes Weston, winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 8; and the highly regarded Spielberg, who was second to Dr. Schivel on Aug. 8. Other likely runners are the maidens Dixie’s Two Stents, and North Pole. The race is not expected to have a large field.
Flavien Prat will ride Dr. Schivel on Monday, Cohen said.
“Hopefully, we’ll have a good result,” Cohen said.
Sale negotiations began after the maiden race win with owners and breeders Bill Branch and Arnold Hill. Branch will retain a minority interest in Dr. Schivel, Cohen said.
Dr. Schivel finished third and second in two maiden special weight races at Santa Anita and Los Alamitos in June and July. Glatt mentioned Dr. Schivel as a potential acquisition after the Los Alamitos race on July 4.
“Mark thought he was a pretty nice colt and that he had trouble in his first two races,” Cohen said. “Mark had recommended that we get involved in the horse before the win. We were late to heed his advice.”
The Del Mar Futurity could be part of a big weekend in stakes for Rancho Temescal and Red Barons Barn’s 2-year-olds. The stable plans to run Inner Beauty in Sunday’s $75,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Cotopaxi in Monday’s $100,000 Juvenile Turf. Those races are run at a mile.
Inner Beauty was fourth in two six-furlong stakes in Ireland in July – the Group 3 EBF Sprint Stakes at Naas and the Group 2 Balanchine Stakes at The Curragh. Cotopaxi will have his stakes debut at Del Mar. He won a race for 2-year-olds on the synthetic track at Chelmsford City, northeast of London, in his second start on June 17.
The Del Mar Futurity is one of two Grade 1 races on the closing weekend of the summer meeting. Sunday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs is led by My Girl Red, who won the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 7, and Princess Noor, a sharp maiden race winner on Aug. 22.
The Del Mar season concludes Monday. Daytime Thoroughbred racing in Southern California resumes with the start of the Santa Anita autumn meeting on Sept. 19.
