A dozen more join tie for fastest furlong on day 2 of OBS breeze show
A logjam on the leaderboard of the under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training continued on Friday, as a dozen juveniles tied the fastest furlong time established in the prior day's opening session.
Further suggesting parity through the catalog, the 18 juveniles - six on Thursday and 12 on Friday - who share the bullet of 9 4/5 seconds over the Ocala Training Center's Safetrack surface are by 17 different sires. The only stallion represented twice is Uncle Mo, who had a pair of fillies work in that time on Friday.
Uncle Mo, who stands at Coolmore's Ashford Stud, established an earnings record for a North American freshman sire in 2015, when his first crop included Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and divisional champion Nyquist. That colt, of course, went on to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby. Uncle Mo's current juveniles are his offspring conceived in the spring of 2016, when his popularity and quality of mares saw a boost following his breakout freshman season. His two bullet workers on Friday were out of the stakes-winning More Than Ready mare Hard to Stay Notgo and the Elusive Quality mare My Fast One, respectively.
Hard to Stay Notgo's filly, the first foal out of her dam, is consigned by Sequel Bloodstock as agent for breeders Chester and Mary Broman. The New York-bred filly is from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Joking, Minardi, and Preach, the latter a prominent producer. Also appearing on the catalog page are Grade 2 winner and successful sire Tale of the Cat and Grade 2 winner and young stallion Fed Biz.
My Fast One is from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Wekiva Springs. Her filly is consigned to sale by Top Line Sales, as agent.
Two more freshman sires from this highly-anticipated class had juveniles from their first crop tie for the fastest furlong work, as colts by Race Day and Secret Circle shared that time. Juveniles by Wicked Strong and Karakontie worked in 9 4/5 during the opening session.
Colts by Bernardini and his son Stay Thirsty were among the fastest furlong workers on Friday, as was a colt by leading juvenile sire Into Mischief. Rounding out those tied for the top time in the session were fillies by Majestic City, Midshipman, Uncaptured, and Union Rags, and a colt by Discreet Cat.
Among those juveniles who stretched out to work a quarter-mile rather than the more traditional furlong, a filly by Super Saver stood alone with the fastest work of the sale, breezing in 20 2/5 seconds on Friday.
The filly, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, as agent, is out of the Grade 2-placed Majestic Warrior mare Macha. Graded/group stakes winners Cyber Secret, Maldita Primavera, and Pure Silver appear on the catalog page.
The breeze show for the OBS March sale, which kicks off the major-market 2-year-old sales season in North America, concludes on Saturday, with the sale next Tuesday and Wednesday. For hip-by-hip results from Friday's works, click here.
