OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Downtown Mischief has wreaked havoc on the competition in her first two starts and will look to do so again when she makes her stakes debut in Saturday’s $100,000 Cicada Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct. While the Cicada is run at the same six-furlong distance at which Downtown Mischief won her first two starts, the New York-bred daughter of Into Mischief will be facing open company for the first time in this six-horse field. Downtown Mischief, trained by Linda Rice for Sheila Rosenblum, has been very professional in her two wins. On Jan. 14, she broke on top, was fine to allow favored Weekend Rags to make the lead, then ran right by that one in midstretch to romp by 7 3/4 lengths. Breaking from the outside post in her second start, Downtown Mischief stalked dueling leaders early, made the lead before the quarter pole without much effort, then held the stakes-placed Midtown Lights at bay through the lane. “She ran pretty fast in her first start and I was happy to see she came back and ran the same way,” said Rice, who is the meet’s leading trainer with 29 wins, but only 1 for 11 in stakes. Jose Lezcano, on board for the first two wins, rides Downtown Mischief from post 3 on Saturday. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Rice also sends out Fancy Azteca, a filly she claimed for $20,000 out of a nine-length win Jan. 22. Fancy Azteca came back to win a starter allowance Feb. 21, displaying an off-the-pace style that would serve her well here. Dylan Davis rides from post 6. Fabulously Funny gave trainer Tony Dutrow his 1,999th career win when she won a maiden race on Feb. 17 at Aqueduct. Saturday, she’ll look to give Dutrow his 2,000th career victory and 213th in a stakes. After running third in her debut when she bobbled two jumps out of the gate, Fabulously Funny came back to win her maiden against a modest group in the slop on Feb. 17. She ran .33 of a second slower than did Downtown Mischief who won a statebred allowance two races later on the same card. “She keeps getting a little better, she improved from her first race. Her second race I thought she was in command pretty much the whole way,” Dutrow said. “She’s training good to where she could possibly go forward a step or two. I’m all game to take a try at that field.” Kendrick Carmouche rides Fabulously Funny from post 4. The Indiana-bred Hot Little Thing ships in from Kentucky for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. Hot Little Thing, a daughter of Army Mule, won an Indiana-bred stakes by 13 1/2 lengths last September before finishing third when attempting to stretch out around two turns on Oct. 5, her most recent start. Her regular rider, Alex Achard, will make his Aqueduct debut. Hot Little Thing will break from post 2. Tappin Josie is 3 for 3 this year – and 5 for 10 overall – and is coming back two weeks after winning the Society Hill Stakes at Parx Racing for trainer Horacio De Paz. Musicmansandy won a $40,000 claimer at Laurel Park last Sunday for trainer Norm Cash. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
