Dortmund works five furlongs in possible Awesome Again prep

Dortmund, who finished behind California Chrome in two major races at the Del Mar summer meeting, worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday for yet another potential encounter against his rival.
Dortmund could run in the $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1, a leading prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 5. California Chrome will be favored in the Awesome Again.
Dortmund was second to California Chrome in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap on July 23 and third behind California Chrome and Beholder in the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 20.
Dortmund is trained by Bob Baffert, who had two other prominent workers on Monday. Lord Nelson, the winner of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in July, worked five furlongs in 59.20 seconds. He is likely to run in the $300,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Oct. 8.
Hoppertunity, fourth in the Pacific Classic, worked five furlongs in a minute flat. He could run in the Awesome Again or the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 8. Hoppertunity was third behind California Chrome in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in March.
