Dortmund turns in bullet workout, eyes San Antonio Stakes
Dortmund, unraced since winning the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar in November, worked a half-mile in 47 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday, the fastest of 47 recorded works at the distance.
The workout was the first for Dortmund since Jan. 3 and leaves open the possibility that the six-time stakes winner can make his 2016 debut in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on dirt at Santa Anita on Feb. 6.
Dortmund missed an expected start in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on Jan. 9 after trainer Bob Baffert said he was not happy with the way the 4-year-old colt performed in a seven-furlong workout Jan. 3. California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year, won the San Pasqual. California Chrome is scheduled to be sent to the United Arab Emirates this week for the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 26.
Dortmund, owned by Kaleem Shah, has won 8 of 10 starts and earned $1,712,480. His losses were a third behind American Pharoah in the Kentucky Derby and a fourth behind that stablemate in the Preakness Stakes last May.
