Dortmund breezes half-mile

Dortmund, considered one of the top 3-year-old prospects of the winter, worked a half-mile in 48.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday, his first workout since winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 20.
Owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Bob Baffert, Dortmund is unbeaten in three starts, including a maiden race for sprinters at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, and an allowance race at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29.
In Sunday’s workout, Dortmund exercised in company with the Baffert-trained Wabel, who was timed in 48.60 seconds. Dortmund started outside of Wabel and ran alongside the stablemate through the stretch. Jockey Martin Garcia was aboard Dortmund.
Baffert, who watched the workout with Shah, timed Dortmund galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.80.
By Big Brown, Dortmund could make his 3-year-old debut in the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 7 or the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes over the same distance on March 7. Sunday, Baffert said it was “too early” to select a race for Dortmund’s next start
