Don’t Tell Sophia bred, taken out of training

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Don’t Tell Sophia isn’t officially retired yet, according to trainer and co-owner Phil Sims, but the standout 7-year-old mare has been bred to Medaglia d’Oro and taken out of training.
“She was bred last month, and we’re going to find out soon whether or not she’s in foal,” Sims said Tuesday from his Keeneland base in Lexington, Ky. “If she’s in foal, she’s retired, and if not, we’ve still got plenty of time to bring her back for a fall campaign.”
Don’t Tell Sophia was a 2014 Eclipse Award finalist in the older filly-mare division following a season in which she earned more than $900,000 by winning four stakes, including the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland, and finishing second to Untapable in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita. The career earnings for the daughter of Congaree are nearly $1.4 million.
Don’t Tell Sophia had been in light training before being bred.
“She’d be good to go if we wanted to bring her back,” said Sims. “She’s sound and everything. Hopefully we’d be able to run her a time or two leading up to the big races here at home,” referring to the Spinster and BC Distaff at Keeneland in October.
