Doctor Oscar makes his two-turn debut Saturday night, when he attempts to win his fourth consecutive race in the $100,000 Minnesota Derby at Canterbury Park. Doctor Oscar has won all three of his starts at the meet. The Minnesota Derby is over a mile and 70 yards and is the centerpiece of a card that features four stakes for Minnesota-breds. The offerings include the $50,000 Glitter Star, which Ready to Runaway will attempt to win for the fourth time in her career. The stakes are worth a total of $300,000. The Minnesota Derby field of eight includes Bens Malice, the runner-up in the Mystic Lake Derby on turf at Canterbury; Love the Nest, a stakes winner last year at Canterbury; and Cousinvinnysacanuck, who won an allowance route over older rivals last month at Canterbury. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Last year at Canterbury, he won his debut, and then ran fourth in the Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows and third in the Northern Lights Futurity at Canterbury. “He showed a lot of talent from the start, when he was a 2-year-old,” said David Van Winkle, who trains Doctor Oscar for breeder Peter Mattson. “The two times he did get beat, he had some excuses. But he’s shown a lot of talent and, hopefully, he’ll be able to run a distance. I think he will the way he’s bred.” Doctor Oscar is by Shackleford, who captured the Preakness Stakes. Doctor Oscar has won most of his races on the front end, but he showed some versatility in a June 11 allowance win, coming from fourth early after breaking slowly. Doctor Oscar, who will break from post 4 under regular rider Chad Lindsay, could show the way in the Minnesota Derby. He contested the pace in the Myers and went on to a length win in the six-furlong race. Doctor Oscar covered the distance in a stakes-record time of 1:08.60. “They went fast on the front end,” Van Winkle said. “You could tell when he was running he wasn’t all out and was settled. He wasn’t asked, and watching him you’d assume he’d have something left. He ran a nice race.” Doctor Oscar has another variable that might help him get the two turns Saturday. “He’s a big, strong horse,” Van Winkle said. Van Winkle also will saddle Bens Malice for Mattson. Bens Malice has registered his three wins going two turns on the grass. “My concern with him is that he might not like running on the dirt as well as he does the turf,” Van Winkle said. Alonso Quinonez has the mount from post 2. Love the Nest won last year’s Northern Lights Futurity by 7 1/4 lengths under Ry Eikleberry, who has the mount in the Minnesota Derby on Saturday. Love the Nest enters the Minnesota Derby off a runner-up finish in the Myers. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 83, while Doctor Oscar earned a field-best number of 85. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! In the Glitter Star, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, Ready to Runaway moves back to the main track off a sixth-place finish on turf in the Minnesota Turf Distaff. The last time she ran on the main track she won a Canterbury allowance at a mile by more than seven lengths on June 8, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 80. Eikleberry has the mount Saturday from post 5. Mac Robertson trains Ready to Runaway, an eight-time stakes winner who has earned more than $500,000. Ready to Runaway races for John Mentz. Hot Shot Kid is looking for the 17th win of his career in the $50,000 Wally’s Choice, which is for 3-year-olds and up over 1 1/16 miles. He has won 10 stakes and earned $676,275. Eikleberry has the mount from post 6 for Warren L. Bush and Robertson. The $100,000 Minnesota Oaks field of 12 includes Amaretto Di Amore, who is a full sister to nine-time stakes winner Mr. Jagermeister. He won the Minnesota Derby and earned more than $700,000. Amaretto Di Amore won her maiden by 8 1/2 lengths last out at Canterbury. Kelsi Harr has the mount for co-breeder, co-owner, and trainer Valorie Lund.
