SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Divine Miss Grey, who was pulled up and vanned off in the Aug. 3 De La Rose Stakes, was euthanized Monday due to complications from surgery, according to trainer Danny Gargan. In the De La Rose, Divine Miss Grey had fractured the sesamoid in her left foreleg, but the original prognosis was that she would survive. Following surgery to repair the fracture, Divine Miss Grey was not getting sufficient blood flow to her foot, Gargan said. “We thought everything was fine, we got a phone call that her foot went the other way,” Gargan said. “She was the best horse I ever trained. She built the barn, she’s the horse that made the stable. It’s sad.” Divine Miss Grey was claimed for $16,000 by owner Lucas Stritsman and trainer Luis Ramirez in March 2017 at Gulfstream. Stritsman moved the horse to New York and Gargan. Divine Miss Grey would go on to win six stakes, including the Grade 2 Chilukki at Churchill Downs last year. Divine Miss Grey, a daughter of Divine Park, had a career record of 12-6-1 from 26 starts and earnings of $934,372. Divine Miss Grey was the third racing-related fatality at the Saratoga meet. Go Big or Go Home became the fourth when he broke down in Wednesday’s eighth race and was later euthanized.
