ALTOONA, Iowa – The two-day Iowa Festival of Racing, consisting of six stakes races worth $975,000 in total purses, starts Friday with the $100,000 Iowa Distaff, a 1 1/16-mile test for fillies and mares. Headed by 2013 winner Flashy American and 2014 winner Diva’s Diamond, the Iowa Distaff attracted seven runners, including five shippers from Kentucky. Flashy American, trained by Ken McPeek at Churchill Downs, has mostly contested graded stakes since her win in this event as a 4-year-old and won the Grade 3 Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne in 2014. Now 6, the Flashy Bull mare finished second to Mufajaah in Oaklawn’s Grade 2 Bayakoa on Feb. 15 and revisits Prairie Meadows on her way to Saratoga, where she scored in the 2013 Alada Stakes. Diva’s Diamond, the lone locally based member of the field, is conditioned by Karl Broberg, and the 6-year-old mare’s career reached a new peak when she finished second behind the champion Untapable in Oaklawn’s Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap on April 10. She again proved her affinity for the dirt with a 3 1/4-length win in the May 25 Wild Rose, the Iowa Distaff’s local prep. The Iowa Festival of Racing features three consecutive stakes races each night Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:18 Central. Prairie Meadows offers an all-stakes pick three each night and has added a third mandatory-payout pick four that starts with the fourth race on each card at 7:48 p.m. KEY CONTENDERS Ambusher (Last 3 Beyers: 70-67-71) A return to her best form as a 4-year-old, when she was third in Delaware Park’s Grade 3 Obeah (91 Beyer Speed Figure), would put her in the mix. The late-rallying 5-year-old mare makes the trek from Keeneland off a head win in a ThistleDown allowance route. Pretty Fancy (Last 3 Beyers: 88-67-79) Improving 4-year-old enters fresh following a career-best 87 Beyer when fourth, beaten 3/4 lengths, in Keeneland’s Grade 3 Doubledogdare on April 17. Flashy American (Last 3 Beyers: 84-95-71) Unraced since March 14, she worked a sharp four furlongs in 46.80 seconds Sunday at Churchill Downs. Jockey Shane Laviolette, 38 for 216 at Prairie Meadows this season, rides her for the first time. Laviolette is 7 for 33 riding for the McPeek stable in 2014-15. More Than Even (Last 3 Beyers: 77-84-85) Top Oklahoma-bred mare arrives in good form after winning two of three restricted stakes recently at Will Rogers Downs. Has won 13 of 29 lifetime but makes a rare foray into open company. Diva’s Diamond (Last 3 Beyers: 89-77-95) Illinois-bred will be ridden again by Ramon Vazquez, who is 43 for 177 at this meet. Vazquez is just 2 for 10 when riding for trainer Broberg in 2014-15.
