Distance test for nearly everybody in Colorado derby

Mary Rampellini|Jul 02, 2009

All but one of the nine horses in the $25,000 Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Derby will be making their first start beyond a mile in the feature at Arapahoe Park. To be run at 1 1/16 miles, the CTBA Derby drew last year's CTBA Futurity winner, Dance to the Star, and sharp New Mexico stakes winner Concordes Saint.

Both horses will be tested for distance. Dance to the Star is stretching out to two turns for the first time off a runner-up finish in an Arapahoe allowance against older horses June 26. The race was his first start since last July, when he closed from 14 lengths back to win the CTBA Futurity.

Concordes Tune last raced May 24, leading throughout in the $50,000 Norgor Derby at six furlongs at Ruidoso Downs.
