OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though Running Away made her first two starts on turf, trainer Wesley Ward said that was more about distance than surface for the daughter of Gun Runner. After two narrow defeats on the grass, Running Away showed what Ward was hoping to see when she won a dirt maiden race by five lengths in November at Churchill Downs. Saturday, Running Away gets a little more distance while remaining on dirt for her stakes debut in the $125,000 Busanda Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. The Busanda offers its top five finishers (20-10-6-4-2) qualifying points to the May 2 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. The Busanda drew nine 3-year-old fillies, though Bless the Broken is expected to scratch to run in Saturday’s Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds. Carmen’s Candy Jar, cross-entered in a Friday allowance at Aqueduct, will “most likely” start in the Busanda, according to trainer Todd Pletcher. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! She was beaten a half-length in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Saratoga in July before finishing third, beaten a neck, in a one-mile maiden at Keeneland in October. On dirt, going 1 1/16 miles at Churchill, Running Away was a bit keen early, but eventually settled under John Velazquez and ran away when asked in the stretch. “She’ll go all day, she’s got that one speed – it’s a quick speed – and she has a big, long stride and she just keeps going,” Ward said. Sahin Civaci rides Running Away on Saturday from post 9. Ramify, a daughter of Munnings trained by Chad Brown for Juddmonte, was a last-to-first debut winner of a one-mile maiden race on Dec. 8 at Aqueduct. Ramify’s second dam is Sightseek, a seven-time Grade 1 winner and earner of $2.4 million. “She had trained very solid, we liked her. I wasn’t sure she was a win-first-out type,” Brown said. “I thought there was a chance that she’d run really well and move forward from the race, but the fact she was able to finish off her race in the late stages first time out when I didn’t really have her fully cranked, I was very impressed with it. We’ll get her out to two turns, see if she can handle this extra distance. My feeling is she should be able to, but I’m still trying to learn about her as well.” My Sherrona is a maiden but finished second in both of her starts, including to Ramify where she finished 6 3/4 lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Bernieandtherose, a New York-bred daughter of Accelerate trained by Dominick Schettino, has won her last two starts, albeit against statebreds, by a combined 14 lengths. In addition to Carmen’s Candy Jar, Pletcher sends out Ruth, who won her debut by 1 1/4 lengths going one mile Dec. 13 at Gulfstream Park. Queen in the Dark, the runner-up from that race, came back to win her maiden by 5 1/2 lengths on Jan. 1 at Tampa. Sharp Smile, a maiden winner in the slop in November for Brad Cox, and Beautiful Blome, a minor stakes winner at Delaware for Anthony Pecoraro complete the field. The Busanda goes as race 8 on a nine-race card that begins at 12:10 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
