Distance-loving Superbella should be comfortable in Class 3 feature at Happy Valley

Distance races have been key to the success of Superbella, who starts in a Class 3 handicap at Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong on Wednesday with an outstanding chance for his third win in his last four starts.

Trained by Frankie Lor, the 5-year-old Superbella had a big finish to the 2020-21 Hong Kong season, winning a Class 4 handicap at 1 1/8 miles at Happy Valley last April and a Class 3 handicap at 1 1/4 miles at Sha Tin in late June in his final start of the campaign.

In between those races, Superbella was a troubled seventh in a Class 3 handicap at 1 1/8 miles at Happy Valley in May, beaten 3 3/4-length as the favorite while racing in traffic in the final sixteenth.

Superbella was ridden in those races by Joao Moreira, Hong Kong’s leading rider, who has the mount in Wednesday’s $201,592 race at 1 1/8 miles, formally known as the Creasy Handicap. Superbella tends to run from off the pace, which will make a good trip vital around the sharp turns of Happy Valley. Superbella drew post 10 in a field of 12.

Happy Valley has an eight-race program, beginning at 7:15 a.m. Eastern, or 4:15 a.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

Of the 12 runners, four have started at the current Hong Kong season, which began earlier this month. Of those, Wealthy Delight may appreciate this distance, having finished a troubled sixth in a handicap at about a mile and 50 yards at Happy Valley on Sept. 8. Wealthy Delight has won twice in 12 career starts in Hong Kong, with both wins at Happy Valley.

Golden Spectrum is yet another threat from off the pace in his first start of the new season. In July, Golden Spectrum was a troubled eighth in a race with the same conditions as Wednesday’s race. Golden Spectrum was winless in nine starts in the 2020-21 Hong Kong season, with two third-place finishes.
