Diodoro has two live ones at Northlands

Randy Goulding|Aug 07, 2009

Trainer Robertino Diodoro has two solid shots at winning the seventh race at Northlands Park on Sunday. The one-mile feature for $22,000 claimers drew five horses and headlines the eight-race card.

Diodoro will saddle Sweetsouthernstyle and Instantly, who are owned separately and are not coupled in the wagering. Sweetsouthernstyle ships in from Prairie Meadows where he finished last as the odds-on favorite in a first-level allowance race that carried a $16,000 claiming option on July 3. Sweetsouthernstyle was claimed out of the race and he will be making his first start for Diodoro. A 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding, Sweetsouthernstyle has good speed and he figures to put it to good use breaking from post 1. In his previous start he led from start to finish in a $12,500 claiming race at Prairie Meadows on June 16.

Perry Winters rides Sweetsouthernstyle.

Instantly and Slews the Standard have taken turns beating each other in their last two races.

Slews the Standard scored a front-running win over Bling with Instantly third in a one-mile $22,000 claiming race on July 8. Instantly came back to edge Slews the Standard going 1 1/16 miles for the same price on July 24.

Slews the Standard, claimed out of his last race by trainer Cody Anderson, will be ridden by Stephen Heiler. Rickey Walcott retains the mount on Instantly.

Hurricane Tiki looks playable at what could be a decent price. Trained by Dale Saunders, Hurricane Tiki is coming off of a fourth-place finish behind Slews the Standard on July 8. The pace was slow, and after trailing early Hurricane Tiki couldn't make up much ground. With Sweetsouthernstyle and Laurolympio in the field, there should be a much brisker pace for Hurricane Tiki to work with.
