A Different Style cruises in Jimmy Winkfield

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – This one was over early.
When A Different Style broke alertly and the other speed didn’t, A Different Style enjoyed an uncontested trip for seven furlongs under Kendrick Carmouche and galloped to a three-length victory in Saturday’s $150,000 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct. Global Citizen, who chased A Different Style from the outside throughout, held second by a head over longshot Glennwood.
It was 2 3/4 lengths back to Jumpmaster in fourth. He was followed by California Night, Devine Entry, the 3-2 favorite, and Smooth B.
The win was the third from five starts for A Different Style, a son of The Factor owned by Leonard Green and trained by John Servis. The win enabled A Different Style to bounce back from a fourth-place finish in the Heft Stakes at Laurel Park on Dec. 30.
In the Heft, A Different Style got involved in a hot early pace and faded from the three-sixteenths pole home, beaten 9 1/2 lengths.
Saturday, A Different Style was able to avoid a duel with Jumpmaster when that horse didn’t break sharp. A Different Style opened up a one-length lead after a quarter in 23.28 seconds and opened up to two lengths after a half-mile in 47.24 seconds. A Different Style skipped over the sealed, muddy surface thereafter, running six furlongs in 1:12.45 and completing seven furlongs in 1:26.07 and getting a 78 Beyer Speed Figure.
“He was sitting in there so quiet, he left there really good, I glanced over and [Jumpmaster] never broke good, and the only thing went through my mind is try and get the first quarter in 23,” Carmouche said. “In my hands he was going so easy and I don’t feel any pressure from the inside or outside. Once we got to the eighth pole, I just said it’s a race home from here, and he responded to me [hitting] him right handed.”
A Different Style returned $7.30 as the second choice.
“I thought that was pretty impressive,” Servis told NYRA publicity. “In his last race, he hadn’t run in a while and got tired in the stretch. Coming out of that race, we got some pretty good works into him and I think we got that issue corrected.”
Servis said he would consider pointing A Different Style to the Grade 3, $250,000 Bay Shore Stakes, at seven furlongs, here on April 7.
