HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Nominations were released Sunday for the $200,000 Smile Sprint Invitational, which headlines the Summit of Speed program July 3 at Gulfstream Park along with the Grade 2, $350,000 Princess Rooney Invitational. C Z Rocket, the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint runner-up, is the marquee name among the 15 horses nominated for the Grade 3 Smile, although trainer Peter Miller said Monday that the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar will be up next for him. Only three other horses based outside South Florida were nominated for the six-furlong Smile. They are: Chateau, winner of the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap this past winter at Aqueduct; Rubus, an allowance winner earlier this month at Churchill Downs; and Special Reserve, who has captured three of his last four starts, including the Grade 3 Maryland Sprint at Pimlico on May 15. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures The 2019 Smile winner Diamond Oops, who finished sixth in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, tops the local contingent along with Double Crown and Chance It, first and second in a high-level allowance race four weeks ago. They are expected to meet again in the Smile. Among the incentives management has offered owners to run in the Smile are no fees for horses that have been graded stakes-placed in 2020-21, and a payment of $10,000 to the owners of horses who won a graded stakes during that same period. Diamond Oops, game winner of an overnight handicap here on June 5, worked six furlongs in 1:12.80 over the turf Sunday at Palm Meadows. Both Double Crown and Chance It worked at Gulfstream Park that same morning, with Double Crown going an easy five-eighths in 1:02.80 and Chance It smoking four furlongs in 46.10 with jockey Edgard Zayas aboard. Chance It galloped out five-eighths in 1:00.41. Double Crown is one of three horses trainer Kathy Ritvo nominated for the Smile along with Ournationonparade and Frosted Grace. Saffie Joseph Jr. also nominated a trio: Chance It, Wind of Change, and Doc Amster. The racing office released the second invitation list for the Princess Rooney, a Win and You’re In event for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Five fillies and mares were dropped from the original list put out the previous week, including Grade 1 winners Bell’s the One and Sconsin, who raced on Saturday. They were replaced with five new names, the most noteworthy being Venetian Harbor, an impressive wire-to-wire winner of the Grade 2 Monrovia at Santa Anita on June 5. The other new invitees are Bronx Beauty, Honor Way, Mundaye Call, and Sound Machine. A third and final invitation list for the Princess Rooney is due on Sunday. Among those who have expressed an interest in shipping to South Florida for the seven-furlong Princess Rooney are the connections of Chub Wagon, Pacific Gale, and Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses winner Estilo Talentoso, who worked a bullet half-mile in 47.40 Saturday morning at her home base at Delaware Park. Entries for the Smile and Princess Rooney will be drawn on June 30.
