DeVivo: Pick three play for Saratoga for Monday, Aug. 3
I’m taking a stance against the two top choices on the morning line in Monday’s fifth race at Saratoga, Greek Life (3-1) and Time for Angie (7-2), in the hope of getting off to a good start in the pick three that begins with that $12,500 claiming sprint. Greek Life’s trainer, Mike Maker, is 2 for 35 in claiming sprints at Saratoga. Time for Angie’s new trainer, Gary Gullo, is 4 for 38 first time off the claim with horses back following a layoff of 31 to 60 days
Race 5: Looking for a price, I’m using COASTAL SANGRIA (#6, 15-1), who scored a win at 14-1 at Saratoga last summer, and LIBERTY FUZE (#7, 8-1), who romped the last time she ran at this class level.
Race 6: SCATCAPADE (#7, 6-1) ran well twice in turf sprints at Saratoga last season. Trainer Christophe Clement is just 2 for 11 with turf sprinters in allowance races returning from a break of 31 to 60 days, but three others each missed by a neck. ORIENT HARBOR (#8, 5-1) makes the second start of her form cycle. Last summer, that same situation produced her maiden victory locally.
Race 7: STORM (#9, 7-2) is a logical choice making his first start for a tag for Todd Pletcher following a short layoff – a 24 percent angle in turf routes. As back-ups, I will use a pair of longshots, ICED OVER (#6, 12-1) and ANALYSIS (#10, 12-1). Iced Over switches from a sprint to a route following a layoff, an angle that produces a $5.76 return on investment for trainer Mike Lauer. Analysis makes his third start off the layoff in a turf route allowance, an angle that George Weaver has used to produce a 4-for-13 record and $5.07 ROI.
