DeVivo: Pick three play at Del Mar for Friday, July 31
Here is a pick three sequence Friday at Del Mar with wide-open races. It should pay well if it connects without any morning-line favorites on the suggested play.
Race 5: AL’S UNCLE (#2, 6-1) makes his first start in California for trainer Bob Hess and owner Summertime Racing. The same connections twice at Del Mar last season with horses similar to this one making either their first or second start off the claim. NAHEM (#1, 8-1) makes his first start off the claim for a low-profile trainer who is 3 for 12 with new acquisitions in routes back within 30 days. His last turf route produced horses who finished first and second next time out with Beyers of 88 and 85.
Race 6: DESERT DYNAMO (#4, 4-1) is much improved since switching to the barn of Jerry Hollendorfer and asked to go two turns. Note that Hollendorfer is 3 for 4 with 31-to-60-day layoff types running in allowances at Del Mar. Two starts ago, BATTI MAN (#7, 6-1) was second to Appealing Tale, who came back to just miss in last weekend’s Grade 3 San Diego Handicap.
Race 7: I’m going to try and beat probable favorite My Palmilla in the CTBA Stakes, using second-time starter RECKLESS CHARM (#6, 9-2), the runner-up to My Palmilla; and IBELIEVEWEWILLWIN (#1, 6-1), a Northern California shipper who drops into statebred company for the first time, as the primary plays. As a backup, I will toss in longshot MARQUEE CAT (#9, 20-1), whose trainer, Jeff Bonde, hits at 19 percent (7 for 26) with a positive return on investment of $2.22 with 2p-year-olds at Del Mar returning in less than 30 days.
