Deviant being considered for Bourbon Stakes

Deviant, who emerged as one of the top 2-year-olds during the Retama Park meet, which closes Wednesday night, could be headed to Keeneland. Deviant won his second straight stakes race Saturday and will now be considered for the Grade 3, $250,000 Bourbon on Oct. 6, according to his trainer, Danny Pish.
Deviant won his maiden in the $75,000 El Joven Stakes on Aug. 14 at Retama, near San Antonio. He won by 7 3/4 lengths in the one-mile turf race, and then went to Louisiana Downs, where last Saturday he won the $60,000 Sunday Silence. Deviant closed from eighth for a two-length win in the 7 1/2-furlong turf race, run on the undercard of the Super Derby.
“It was a very professional effort,” Pish said. “Being in the one hole he had to bide his time and wait. He waited patiently. He was able to fall back and let the speed go.”
Deviant angled out into the stretch and rolled home in the field of 10, earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 63. He is now 2 for 2 at both two turns and on turf. Deviant, who started his career in Kentucky, is by the young stallion Daredevil and races for Red Lane Thoroughbreds.
Pish said the horse was scheduled to return to Retama.
The Bourbon, at 1 1/16 miles on turf, carries a Win and You’re In berth for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
“We’ll definitely take a hard look at that,” Pish said of the Bourbon.
Pish had a starter in the Juvenile Turf in 2013, saddling Got Shades to a close fifth-place finish at Santa Anita. Got Shades had won the Sunday Silence leading up to his appearance in the Breeders’ Cup.
