Deterministic to stretch out in Saratoga Derby

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Deterministic, second to Neat in the one-mile Manila Stakes in his turf debut, will stretch out to 1 3/16 miles in Saturday’s Grade 1, $600,000 Saratoga Derby Invitational at Saratoga.
Trainer Christophe Clement said deep in the pedigree of Deterministic are fillies Amelia and Aquilegia, who were successful distance mares. Clement also felt Deterministic was doing his best running late in the Manila.
“I thought the last eighth of a mile he finished very well and he galloped out strong,” Clement said. “I always thought he’d stay long on the grass. For once I can try it, if I’m wrong, I’ll take the blame.”
Clement also entered Carson’s Run, who also stretches out after winning the Tale of the Cat Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth Park on June 23.
Also entered in the Saratoga Derby were Izzy D’Oro, trained by Aidan O’Brien, Legend of Time, Cugino, Royal Majesty and White Palomino.
*** Cogburn, acknowledged as the top male turf sprinter in the country, drew post 6 in a field of 11 entered for Saturdays’ Grade 2, $300,000 Troy Stakes. Stakes winners Big Invasion and Grooms All Bizness head the competition.
*** More Than Looks, a multiple listed stakes winner last year who was beaten two lengths when sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last November, heads a field of nine entered in the $135,000 Lure Stakes scheduled for one mile on turf.
