OZONE PARK, N.Y. – For a horse that’s won five graded stakes, two of which are Grade 1s, and banked more than $1.4 million, Mind Control seems like he always flies under the radar. Mind Control again figures to be overlooked when he makes his 6-year-old debut against the likes of Speaker’s Corner, First Captain, and five others in Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Carter Handicap, one of five undercard stakes on the 11-race Wood Memorial program. Mind Control, second in the Carter last year, has not raced since he won the Parx Dirt Mile on Sept. 25. He was shipped to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November, but had to scratch owing to a temperature, something that had plagued him earlier in his career. The fever was high enough that Mind Control had to go to a clinic and spent three weeks in California before shipping back to part-owner Steve Brunetti’s farm in Ocala, Fla. :: DRF's Wood Memorial Day headquarters – Previews, past performances, picks, and more At the end of last year, there were stallion offers from Japanese and Kentucky interests, according to Rick Sacco, racing manager for Brunetti, who owns Mind Control with Sol Kumin’s Madaket Stable. But Brunetti and Kumin expressed a desire to run the horse this year with hopes of making it back to the Breeders’ Cup. “We felt disheartened we didn’t get to run in the Breeders’ Cup because he was doing so well,” Sacco said. “He did great over the winter at Red Oak, we shipped him into Todd [Pletcher], and the horse has been thriving.” Mind Control is the older half-brother to Goddess of Fire, a 3-year-old daughter of Mineshaft whom Sacco confirmed for the Kentucky Oaks following her runner-up finish in last Saturday’s Gulfstream Park Oaks. Sacco did note that running in a Grade 1 against horses with solid recent form such as Speaker’s Corner, Green Light Go, and Reinvestment Risk is a tall order. “We’re looking to start him back and have him give a good account of himself,” Sacco said. Mind Control has always run well at Aqueduct, with four stakes wins and two seconds from six starts here. Joel Rosario will ride Mind Control for the first time. Mind Control is one of seven runners in this field who enter the race off a win. Speaker’s Corner will likely go favored coming off eye-catching victories in the Grade 3 Fred Hooper and Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Mile. Reinvestment Risk earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure winning an allowance at Gulfstream in February. Green Light Go has won two straight, both at Aqueduct, including the Stymie. First Captain won an allowance at Gulfstream. Drafted won the Grade 3 Toboggan. Bank on Shea won the Pelican stakes on Feb. 12 at Tampa. War Tocsin comes in off a second-place finish at 48-1 in the Grade 3 General George at Laurel.
