ARCADIA, Calif. - Barraza gave Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux his first stakes win of the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting with an easy victory in Saturday’s $77,900 Clockers' Corner Stakes for turf sprinters. Desormeaux, 51, will be after a much bigger prize next Saturday when he rides at Gulfstream Park for the first time since 2014 on Stilleto Boy in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup. Stilleto Boy, trained by Ed Moger Jr. for his brother Steve, was a well-beaten third in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, finishing 12 1/2 lengths behind Flightline, who won by 11 1/2 lengths. Earlier in 2021, Stilleto Boy won the Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows, finished second in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes to the late multiple stakes winner Medina Spirit at Santa Anita in October, and was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar in November. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Desormeaux has been Stilleto Boy's regular rider since the gelding joined Moger’s stable last summer after being acquired at auction for $420,000 days after the Iowa Derby. Early Sunday, Stilleto Boy worked five furlongs in 1:02.40 at Santa Anita. Although the time was not particularly fast, Desormeaux described Stilleto Boy as “brilliant” and “full of energy.” Stilleto Boy will be an outsider in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup against runners such as Knicks Go and Life Is Good, a fact very much on Desormeaux’s mind on Sunday. “Maybe he’ll run a great race and one of the others will have a bad day,” Desormeaux said. “It’s a very rich race. I want to win, but a third would be brilliant.” Barraza gave Desormeaux his first stakes win since Beyond Brilliant won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on Nov. 27. Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Barraza led throughout the six-furlong turf race, finishing in 1:07.30. Owned by David and Holly Wilson, Barraza earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 97. “I don’t think anybody would have beaten that horse yesterday,” Desormeaux said Sunday morning. Cerin said Sunday that Barraza is likely to remain in turf sprints. One option for the 4-year-old colt is the $75,000 Siren Lure Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course April 10. “Don’t mess with success,” Cerin said. “He came out of it well and he came back sound.” Barraza is undefeated in three turf sprints, including two races on the hillside turf course in October and on Jan. 2. “He’s always been awesome to work on the dirt, but his efforts on the grass are just phenomenal,” Desormeaux said after Saturday’s race. “He’s just naturally fast.” Jockey Umberto Rispoli is riding in Saturday's program's at Gulfstream Park. His leading mount is Field Pass in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf at 1 1/8 miles. Field Pass, trained by Mike Maker, won the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 27, the first time the 5-year-old horse was ridden by Rispoli. Desormeaux and Rispoli are scheduled to return to Southern California for the Jan. 30 program, which is highlighted by the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes. Desormeaux is booked to ride Say the Word, the winner of the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar on Nov. 26 for trainer Phil D’Amato. Desormeaux rode Say the Word in the Hollywood Turf Cup. Other projected starters in the $225,000 San Marcos Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf are graded stakes winners Acclimate and Bob and Jackie, the graded stakes-placed Friar’s Road, and the allowance race winner Lincoln Hawk. There are three graded stakes on Saturday’s program at Santa Anita led by the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes, a $200,000 race for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Of the 15 nominees, eight are trained by Bob Baffert, including Messier, second at 1-2 in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 11, and Pinehurst, who won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in September and was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in November.
