Desormeaux faces Derby day suspension

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jockey Kent Desormeaux received a three-day suspension for Friday, Saturday and Sunday from stewards at Bay Meadows after he was disqualified from first to second with Smooth in Saturday's seventh race.

The suspension would keep Desormeaux from riding in the Kentucky Derby should U S S Tinosa be entered in the race. Kentucky does not allow jockeys to ride in designated races during suspensions as California does.

Tom Knust, Desormeaux's agent, said Sunday he had already left a voice mail with the California Horse Racing Board that he will appeal the suspension. He will file for a stay of the suspension Monday. Stays are normally granted.
