Deshawn Parker became the 21st jockey to reach 6,000 career wins when he piloted For Mama to victory in the seventh race June 21 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Parker had only three mounts on the card and won the third race on Wicked Intent to hit 5,999 winners.  Parker, 51, began his jockey career in 1988 after growing up around racing through his father, Daryl, who held various positions around the track, including clerk of scales. Daryl Parker passed away in 2021, and Parker said he was riding Tuesday night in memory of his father.  Parker, the winningest Black jockey in modern North American racing, was the perennial leading rider at Mountaineer Park before shifting his focus to Indiana in 2016 and more recently wintering at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Parker, who stands at 5 feet 11 inches, in multiple years was the leading North American jockey by wins, including 2011, when he rode 400 winners.  :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Before Tuesday evening, Parker had gone through a slow June, booting home just four winners from 43 mounts. “I wanted to do it, and I’ve been trying to do it, but it seemed like I just didn’t have the right horse at the right time,” Parker said. “Everyone kept encouraging me to get it, which was nice, but I have to say it’s even better than I expected to get this milestone. It’s a load off, and I couldn’t be happier.”
