Derrynane, Flip My Id try open company in Bolton Landing; card features $145K pick six carryover

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Derrynane and Flip My Id are New York-bred juvenile fillies who were quite impressive beating restricted company in their respective debuts.
Wednesday, both will step into open company for their second starts when they run in the $120,000 Bolton Landing, scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs on the Mellon turf course at Saratoga. The Bolton Landing goes as race 9 on a 10-race card and is the fifth leg of a pick six sequence that begins the day with a $145,196 carryover.
Derrynane, a daughter of Quality Road trained by Christophe Clement, was a handy two-length winner of a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race here July 22. In a field of 10, she sat fourth along the inside, found running room under Joel Rosario in upper stretch, and won easily.
“She was just cruising all the way with Rosario,” Clement said. “She was very impressive, and he can do what he wants with her.”
While calling the jump into open company “ambitious,” Clement also said, “It’d be a bit disappointing if she wasn’t competitive.”
For the second straight race, Derrynane will break from post 3 in a field of 10. There also are two horses entered only to run on the main track – Averly Jane and Golden Bell.
Flip My Id, a daughter of Freud, won her debut on July 5 at Belmont. She sat an inside trip before tipping wide into the lane and was another who won in hand under Irad Ortiz Jr.
“I liked her debut, she was a little green and still got the job done,” trainer Mike Maker said. “Looking for a move forward and see where we’re at with her.”
She will break from post 4 under Ortiz.
Wesley Ward entered two on the turf and two for the dirt. On turf, he has Poppy Flower and Chi Town Lady.
It took Poppy Flower three tries to win her first race, that coming in front-running fashion on June 20 at Belmont Park.
“It’s kind of time to see how good she is,” Ward said.
Chi Town Lady won her debut sprinting on dirt at Keeneland in April. She came out of that race with sore shins, according to Ward, who had hoped to bring her to Royal Ascot.
“She wasn’t quite ready, so we backed up and waited for this race here,” Ward said.
Fulminate, a daughter of Get Stormy trained by Mark Casse, was a front-running, four-length winner of a five-furlong maiden turf race on July 16 at Gulfstream.
Charlee O was a 29-1 debut winner at Belmont. Kneesnhips won her debut at Ellis Park on turf. Cartel Queen, Stand Up Comic, and Landslid would all be trying the turf for the first time.
Averly Jane would be the one to beat if this race got rained off the turf to dirt. She won a maiden race over a good Keeneland surface and beat the boys in the Kentucky Juvenile in the slop at Churchill Downs.
