Derby Day Storm repeats in Dr. T.F. Claussen Memorial
About an hour before the Kentucky Derby, hunch players at ThistleDown were rewarded when the 8-year-old mare Derby Day Storm scored for the second straight year in the Dr. T.F. Claussen Memorial Stakes for Ohio-bred fillies and mares.
Derby Day Storm ($12.60), who delayed the start when she broke through the gate, rallied from off the pace to run down two-time Claussen winner Startin Something by 1 1/2 lengths. In winning for just the second time in 12 starts locally, Derby Day Storm ran six furlongs in 1:13.28.
Trained and partially owned by Bryan Metz, Derby Day Storm was ridden by Dean Sarvis. She was making her first start since November.
The 7-year-old Startin Something, is winless in 19 starts since taking the Claussen for the second time in 2013. Circle Can Run finished third as the 9-5 favorite.
