Der Lu likely to stretch out, possibly in Pocahontas
DEL MAR, Calif. – Der Lu, a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Orb who won first time out last Sunday, could be sent two turns for her next start as trainer Bob Baffert tries to spot his recent 2-year-old filly maiden winners, including Chasing Yesterday and Mother Mother.
“She ran like we thought she would,” said Baffert, who trains Der Lu for Charles and Susan Chu’s Baoma Corp. “She wants to run long. I’d like to run her two turns.”
Baffert said he would consider the Grade 2, $200,000 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 15 for Der Lu. That 1 1/16-mile race is a Win and You’re In qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, run Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs, also at 1 1/16 miles.
Mother Mother worked a half-mile in 49.20 seconds on Thursday at Del Mar. Baffert said he wants to keep both Mother Mother and Chasing Yesterday apart. One should run locally in the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 1.
◗ The veteran Hoppertunity tried the turf on Thursday, working a half-mile in 49.80 seconds around dogs under Flavien Prat. He is under consideration for the Grade 2, $250,000 Del Mar Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on turf Aug. 18.
◗ Roy H, awaiting the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, worked three furlongs in 38.20 seconds on Thursday.
