Delta Prince euthanized at age 6

Regally-bred Grade 1 winner Delta Prince, who was scheduled to enter stud next year in Kentucky, was euthanized Friday. The 6-year-old son of Street Cry was undergoing treatment at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, but suffered complications associated with laminitis and renal failure subsequent to an incident of colic, owner and breeder Adena Springs said in a press release.
“He was one of the last important sons of Street Cry,” farm director Donald Wells said in the release. “He will be sorely missed by not only everyone on our farm but the entire industry. He was a very tough and kind horse who fought every step of the way. I know he would have made a major impact at stud had he been given the opportunity. We would like to thank [trainer] Jimmy Jerkens and his staff for all of their efforts and love that they showed him throughout his career, as well as to everyone at Rood and Riddle for their valiant efforts and impeccable care.”
Delta Prince put together a career record of 14-5-3-4 with earnings of $1,174,170. He posted his biggest victory earlier this year, taking the Grade 1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland. Delta Prince earned a pair of other Grade 1 placings in his career, beaten a neck by Voodoo Song in the 2018 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga and finishing third behind Horse of the Year candidate Bricks and Mortar in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Turf this past January.
Delta Prince also won the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes at Woodbine and finished third in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler Handicap at Aqueduct last year. He finished second in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes and third in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap in 2017.
Delta Prince, by Street Cry, was out of the Grade 3-winning A.P. Indy mare Delta Princess, also the dam of three-time Eclipse Award champion and Hall of Fame racemare Royal Delta, Grade 1 winner Crown Queen, Grade 1-placed Carnival Court, and Grade 2-placed Empire Way. Her son Khozan is currently Florida's leading freshman sire.
