Delta Downs track report

VINTON, La. - With four more weeks remaining in the mixed meeting, six track records have been lowered between the Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

The latest record to fall was the 22-year-old mark of 1:38 for a mile, set by Norm's Promise. This past Sunday, Freon Flier ($3.20) eclipsed the previous time, defeating a good group of allowance rivals by five lengths in 1:37.52.

Owned by Brian S. Dance and trained by Michael Trivigno, Freon Flier was making his first local start following two competitive but off-the-board finishes in the Diplomat Way and Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds. He was ridden by Jerri Nicholas.

Sunday also produced the fastest times of the meeting for three other distances. Canrock (8th race) raced 4 1/2 furlongs in 52.20, three-fifths of a second faster than anyone else at the meet. Double Dare Ya (10th race) shaved a half-second off the current stand's best time at 870 yards and Bugs By Yawl (11th race) did the same going 400 yards.

Two riders enjoyed big days last week, as both Kim "Stover" McIntosh and Guy Smith had four-baggers. McIntosh, who was married in February, has been on a roll since tying the knot, having ridden 18 winners in the last five weeks.

Guy Smith took a bite out of Steve Bourque's lead in the rider standings by booting home four winners on Saturday night. Smith now trails Bourque in wins 84-80.
