Delaware: Trickle of Gold prevails

With the ultra-quick Flame of Love in the field, Trickle of Gold faced a key question going into the $75,600 Sweet and Sassy at Delaware Park: Could she win without the early lead? The answer: Yes.

Trickle of Gold, the even-money favorite in the six-furlong race, sat just behind Flame of Love through very fast fractions of 21.39 and 44.21 and, under a confident ride by Jeremy Rose, took the lead in the stretch and held off Annika Lass by a length. Miss Elsie was up for third.

Trickle of Gold ($4.20) covered the six furlongs in 1:09.16. Owned by John Murphy and trained by Michael Gorham, Trickle of Gold has now won 9 of 17 starts, with most of her victories coming in wire-to-wire fashion.

Annika Lass, who won this race last year, sat a perfect trip under Stewart Elliott behind the pacesetters, and looked set to run past Trickle of Gold in midstretch.
