Delaware police say jockey Rojas shot trainer
Delaware State Police have identified Ruben Rojas, a journeyman jockey, as the man who shot a trainer on the Delaware Park backstretch Wednesday morning, according to an announcement by the law-enforcement agency.
Rojas was arrested shortly after shooting the trainer at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The trainer, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was shot in the stomach, police said, but was admitted to a hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” the police said.
In a statement, police said Rojas began arguing with the trainer while in his car on the backstretch. He then shot the trainer with one round and discarded the gun, which police retrieved from a nearby creek, police said. He was apprehended at a nearby apartment complex and surrendered, according to the statement.
Rojas, 30, has been charged with first-degree assault, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He remains in custody.
Rojas has 17 starts at the current Delaware Park meet, with no wins and one third-place finish.
