Delaware Park: Missy Rules, Ile St. Molly front-running upsetters in Our Mims

Ira Kaplan|May 18, 2013

Missy Rules and Ile St. Molly each upset a division of the Our Mims Stakes on Saturday’s opening day of the Delaware Park meeting the same way - grabbing a clear early lead and never relinquishing it. Missy Rules won the first division of the Our Mims, the sixth race, while Ile St. Molly won the second division, the eighth race. Each division was for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the main track.

Missy Rules, under J.C. Carballo, skipped through a quarter-mile in 24.16 and a half in 47.52 in the $54,625 first division. Hailey’s Star stalked Missy Rules for most of the race, but Missy Rules drew away in midstretch to win by 3 1/2 lengths as Hailey’s Star faded to fourth. Doubled and Broomsage rallied for second and third. The 4-5 favorite My Sonata never entered contention and finished fifth of six

A Peace Rules filly owned by Porter Racing Stable and trained by Randy Nunley, Missy Rules covered the mile in 1:38.88. She returned $17.80.

Josh Navarro and Ile St. Molly slowed down the fractions to 23.98 and 48.10 in the $50,125 second division, with Off My Cloud just off them in second. Ile St. Molly put away Off My Cloud turning for home and held off the late charge of Disco Barbie to win by three-quarters of a length. Off My Cloud held on for third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Disco Barbie. Giant Cats Eye, the 2-1 favorite, stumbled at the start and tired to fifth place in the field of six.

Ile St. Molly, owned by James Glover and trained by Kenny Smith, ran the mile in 1:37.19 – more than 1 1/2 seconds faster than Missy Rules in the first division. Ile St. Molly, who is by Ile St. Louis, paid $12.60.
