Delaware Park canceled its opening day card on Wednesday due to inclement weather. Though all eight races were scheduled for the dirt, consistent rain in the region was deemed a hazard for horses and riders.  "Due to unsafe track conditions caused by the inclement weather, Delaware Park has cancelled the Opening Day live racing card scheduled for today," a press release from the track read.  There is no word yet on whether the canceled races will be reincorporated into Delaware's condition book for a later date. All but two of the eight races on the card were sprints. The feature, a $47,000 allowance run at 5 1/2 furlongs, would have featured six fillies and mares from five different barns.  Delaware's Saturday card, another eight-race card on dirt, is currently scheduled to go on as planned and will now serve as opening day for the track. Turf racing will begin on Wednesday, May 21, the same week that Delaware will add a third day of racing on Thursdays. The following week, the track will add a fourth day on Fridays and operate under this schedule for most of the summer.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
